A delicious tequila sour with that frothy foam you expect from this epic cocktail awaits!

Classic Tequila Sour
During my 2024 trip to Chile, I had my share of pisco sours. They were delicious! Later in the trip, I learned that nearly every country in Latin America has its version, including Mexico with its Tequila Sour and a Mezcal Sour.
You'll love this sour cocktail that's perfectly balanced with the tartness of the lime. And while I prefer to make this cocktail with reposado tequila because of its sweeter undertones, Blanco will work. And the eggwhite foam? It's this cocktail's signature that makes it pop.
What is the Difference between a Margarita and a Tequila Sour?
The main difference between a tequila sour and a margarita lies in the sweeteners. A classic margarita is traditionally made using lime juice and Cointreau or triple sec, while a tequila sour is made with orange bitters and lemon juice and topped with a delicious egg white foam!
Ingredients
Everything you need to make a tequila sour will be listed in the recipe card below, but before you make any swaps, see why each ingredient is needed:
- Egg whites: a classic ingredient in this cocktail, this will create the foam topping.
- Reposado tequila: a smoother type of tequila with notes of vanilla and caramel.
- Simple syrup: adds a bit of sweetness to the mix.
- Lemon juice: freshly squeezed is the best.
- Orange bitters: this will add a nice citrusy flavor to the drink.
- Garnish: this drink is best served with a slice of lime.
Is It Safe to Put Egg Whites in a Cocktail?
Yes! Adding egg whites to a cocktail is not only safe but incredibly delicious! And since we are shaking the egg whites up with alcohol, it will kill any bacteria you are worried about consuming.
How to Make a Tequila Sour at Home
Grab your shaker, and let's get shakin'! Here is how to make the best tequila sour at home, with a few additional tips in each step to ensure the best sip:
- Make the cocktail
First, you'll want to combine all the required ingredients in a cocktail shaker without ice. Give everything a vigorous shake for a minute to create a nice foam. Then, add ice to the shaker and shake for an additional 30 seconds. You'll know it's ready to serve when the sides of the glass are nice and frosted. - Serve & Garnish
Give your shaken mixture a good straining as you pour it into your glass. Top with fresh ice and a slice of lime. Enjoy!

Why You Shake This Cocktail Without Ice
The first initial shake of a tequila sour cocktail does not involve ice. This method is called dry shaking; this is what helps to make our delicious foam topping. During the second shake, adding ice to the mix helps to keep things nice and chilled and helps to create a bit more foam!
