You will never be able to go back to a classic mojito once you try this tequila version!

If you're a fan of tequila and mint, you've got to try this version of a Mojito. It's the perfect bubbly and refreshing cocktail to sip on!

Does a Mojito Contain Tequila

The classic mojito recipe is made with Rum and does not contain tequila; but since I'm not a fan of rum myself, I took the traditional Cuban cocktail ingredients for a spin and swapped the alcohol base.

This website is all about cocktails made with tequila, so of course, this Mojito was included. Other drinks that were given the tequila twist include the Bloody Maria, the Mexican Mule, and the Tequila Screwdriver.

Ingredients

You'll find the amounts to this tequila mojito in the recipe card below; but before you make any swaps, check out why each ingredient is needed:

  • Blanco or Silver Tequila: the main star of this cocktail! Use your favorite brand.
  • Topo Chico or sparkling water: I love using Topo Chico in my cocktails because it's authentic Mexican sparkling water. For this recipe, I like to use the regular or lime flavor but any sparkling water will work just fine.
  • Lime juice: freshly squeezed is the best.
  • Simple syrup: or honey to add a little sweetness.
  • Lime wedges: for garnish.
  • Mint leaves: optional for added garnish.

Best Tequila for Mojitos

This cocktail is made with silver or blanco tequila. If you don't have a favorite brand, here are some of my favorites for everyday cocktails and Margarita recipes:

How to Make a Mojito with Tequila

The detailed steps for making this cocktail are written in detail in the recipe card; here are some additional tips in each to ensure the best drink:

  1. Make the Base
In a cocktail shaker, muddle the mint leaves. You know they are muddled enough when you begin to smell the minty aroma!
  2. Shake it Up
To the cocktail shaker, add ice, and pour the liquid ingredients over the muddled mint leaves. Shake until sides are nice and frothy.
  3. Prep the Glass
To a glass filled with ice, pour the strained mixture into the glass and top with Topo Chico or your favorite sparkling water/ club soda.
  4. Garnish
Lime wedges or mint leaves, or get crazy and add both! The addition of these garnishes adds the extra refreshing flavor to bring this tequila mojito to the next level!

What is the Ratio of Liquor to Lime Juice for a Mojito

For mojitos, I like to use a 2:1 ratio of liquor to lime juice. In this recipe, it's 2 ounces of tequila to 1 ounce of lime juice. As always, if you want to make this cocktail a little stronger, feel free to up the ratio of alcohol to lime juice ratio. Either way, you can't go wrong with any tequila in this refreshing cocktail.

What to Serve with a Tequila Mojito

There is nothing quite like this refreshing tequila mojito on a hot summer day. Mojitos keep everyone's spirits up and make conversations easy. Grab some chips, make some chunky avocado salsa or spicy guacamole, or whip up an easy restaurant-style salsa in your blender. Of course, you can always whip up one of these epic taco recipes or one of the ones inside the Taco Tuesday cookbook linked below.

These remind me of the ones from Little Havana, with less sugar and all the minty goodness
