Mezcal Sour Cocktail
When I'm looking to shake up my happy hour favorites from my usual go-tos like margaritas and tequila cocktails, I reach for the Mezcal!
Last weekend, while out with some girlfriends, I got my first taste of a tequila sour, and oh boy, was it epic! In fact, it was so delightful that I decided to add a smoky twist to the classic recipe and make this Mezcal sour cocktail! It's frothy, flavorful, and comes together in just a few shakes! One sip, and you, too, will be hooked!
Ingredients
Everything you need to make this Mezcal sour will be listed in the recipe card below, but before you make any swaps, see why each ingredient is needed:
- Egg whites: this will create a delicious frothy topping when we shake things up!
- Mezcal: use a high-quality Mezcal for this cocktail, as it makes for the best sip.
- Simple syrup: adds a bit of sweetness to the mix.
- Lemon juice: freshly squeezed is the best.
- Orange bitters: this will add a nice citrusy flavor to the drink.
- Garnish: this drink is best served with a slice of lime.
How to Make a Mezcal Sour
Grab your shaker, and let's get shakin'! Here is how to make the perfect Mezcal sour, with a few additional tips in each step to ensure the best sip:
- Make the cocktail
You'll first want to combine all the required ingredients in a cocktail shaker without ice. Give everything a good shake for a minute to create a nice foam. - Add Ice
After everything is good and shaken up, add ice to the shaker and shake for an additional 30 seconds. It's ready to enjoy when the sides of the glass are nice and frosted. - Serve & Garnish
Give your shaken mixture a good straining as you pour it into your glass. Top with fresh ice to keep things nice and chilled and a slice of lime for garnish. Enjoy!

Dry Shake
If you're wondering why we first shake this drink without ice, this technique is called dry shaking, and it helps to create the frothy foam on top of this cocktail. During the second shake, adding ice to the mix helps to keep things nice and chilled and helps to create a bit more foam!
How to Serve a Mezcal Sour
This cocktail is best enjoyed served with ice and a fresh garnish of a lime slice. Looking to level up this cocktail? Use dehydrated orange slices or citrus peel twists to add a pop of citrusy flavor and color!
If you're hosting a crowd, this Mezcal sour pairs perfectly with my slow-cooker shredded beef tacos or these flavorful street tacos topped with my blender salsa for the perfect bite!
