A Mezcal Mule is as refreshing as the traditional cocktail but better since it's made with your favorite mezcal.

What is a Mezcal Mule
A mezcal mule is a smokey twist on the original Mexican Mule cocktail, which is a Moscow Mule but made with tequila, in this case, mezcal.
It's one of my favorite ways of incorporating the rich and smokey taste of Mezcal with the zingy flavor of ginger beer to create a deliciously smooth fizzy drink that is approved by all mezcal lovers.
What Does a Mezcal Mule Taste Like?
A mezcal mule is a simple, citrusy, boozy cocktail with a smokey aftertaste of mezcal. I love the fizzy tang from ginger beer mixed with the smokiness of mezcal. When combined, it tastes like a spiced drink that's refreshing and good till the last drop.
Mezcal Mule Ingredients
You'll find the amounts to this Mezcal mule in the recipe card below; but before you make any swaps and alter the cocktail, check out why each ingredient is needed:
- Mezcal: use your favorite brand.
- Ginger beer: although some recipes use ginger ale, ginger beer has more flavor and is less sweet, giving this cocktail a more authentic taste.
- Lime juice: freshly squeezed is always the best!
- Lime wedge: for garnish.
How to Make a Mezcal Mule
The detailed steps for making this Mexican mule cocktail are written in detail in the recipe card; here are some additional tips in each to ensure the best drink:
- Shake it up
To a cocktail shaker filled with ice, pour in Mezcal and lime juice. Give the mixture a vigorous shake, you will know it is shaken enough when the sides are nice and frosted. - Pour
To a copper mug filled with ice, pour the strained mixture, making sure to leave room at the top for ginger beer. - Top & Garnish
Top off the cocktail with a splash of ginger beer. Be sure to give the drink one last good stir to ensure the ingredients are mixed well together. Garnish with a lime wedge, and enjoy!

How to Garish a Mezcal Mule
When I have guests over and want to add something to fancy up the look of this cocktail, I like to take lime wedges and skewer them through a cocktail pick! This not only adds a pop of color to this drink, but the addition of the lime garnish brings it to the next level.
Mezcal Mule vs Mexican and Moscow Mules
The difference between all three cocktails can be found in the base. Moscow mules are made with vodka, while Mezcal and Mexican mules are made from two different tequilas. Yes, there are, in fact, different types of tequila, one being the classic and the other mezcal.
Learn more about the differences between Mezcal and Tequila here. There are different levels to the smokiness of mezcal, I recommend starting out with a low-smoky aftertaste if you're trying it out for the first time!
Copper Mugs for Mules
Using a copper mug helps to keep the drink cool for longer than if it were in a glass. Copper reacts immediately to the temperature of the liquid, and the mug becomes ice cold. Using a copper mug helps preserve the cocktail's flavor and ensures that ice won't water it down. Here are some of my favorite copper mugs to use when making Mezcal mules.
