As a tequila lover, I couldn't resist making the classic Moscow Mule with tequila. The outcome is incredibly delicious and refreshing, and it goes down easy. Get your mug ready...

What is a Mexican Mule?
A Mexican Mule is a tequila cocktail that includes ginger beer's fizz and lime juice's citrus. Together, these flavors make a warm, spicy ginger drink that is perfect for slow sipping.
The Difference Between a Mexican Mule and a Moscow Mule
Mexican Mules are a twist on the classic cult favorite, Moscow Mule cocktails. When you order a Moscow Mule from a restaurant it is traditionally made with vodka, while Mexican Mules are made with tequila -although you can also order a Mezcal Mule.
Can't decide? Taste this recipe for yourself and let me know which one you prefer.
Ingredients
You'll find the amounts to this Mexican mule are in the recipe card below; but before you make any swaps and alter the cocktail, check out why each ingredient is needed:
- Tequila: use your favorite brand. I often use Reposado but you can use silver tequila.
- Lime Juice: freshly squeezed is the best.
- Ginger beer: although some recipes use ginger ale, ginger beer has more flavor and gives this cocktail a more authentic taste.
- Lime wedge: for garnish.
How to Make a Mexican Mule
The detailed steps for making this Mexican mule cocktail are written in detail in the recipe card; here are some additional tips in each to ensure the best drink:
- Shake it up
To a cocktail shaker filled with ice pour the required ingredients. Give the mixture a good shake, you know it is shaken enough when the sides are nice and frosted. - Pour
Grab a handful of ice, place it in a copper mug and pour the strained mixture. - Garnish
Add a lime wedge on the side or squeeze it in your cocktail for more flavor! Enjoy!

Why Do You Use Copper Mugs for Mule Cocktails?
While copper mugs are not required to serve this drink, using a mug helps to keep the drink cool for longer than if it were in a glass. Copper reacts immediately to the temperature of the liquid and the mug becomes ice cold. Using a copper mug helps to preserve the flavor of the cocktail and ensure that the ice won't water it down.
How to Garnish a Mexican Mule
A true Mexican mule is not finished without the help of a lime wedge. To add an extra flare of fun, I like to skewer lime wedges through a cocktail pick or simply squeeze an extra lime into my cocktail for added flavor. A little lime juice never did any wrong.
