All you need are three ingredients to make a classic Tequila Gimlet. Follow this recipe, and you'll be sipping on a fresh and delicious cocktail in minutes.

What is a Tequila Gimlet
A Tequila Gimlet is made with lime juice and tequila, but it omits the Triple Sec or Cointreau found in nearly all margarita recipes. This is why some people call it a "poor man's margarita."
Don't let that nickname fool you. In fact, in the early 2000s, while in grad school, when I couldn't afford to go out to bars or cocktails made with expensive ingredients, drinks like the one I'm sharing today, my Orange Tequila Gimlet, the Tequila and Lemonade, and a Tequila and Coke quickly became pre-going out staples among my group of friends.
How Does a Tequila Gimlet Taste
Compared to a Margarita, a tequila Gimlet tastes really similar and feels just as boozy. It has all the fresh citrusy flavors from the lime juice combined with the peppery flavor of tequila and lightly sweetened with simple syrup.
Ingredients
A Tequila Gimlet is made of just a couple of ingredients, which makes this one of my go-to cocktails when I want something simple to sip on. The measurements are in the recipe card but first, check that you have:
- Tequila: use your favorite brand of Blanco or Silver.
- Fresh lime juice: the citrus base for this cocktail is always best freshly squeezed.
- Simple syrup: it mixes easily in cocktails. You can make it ahead, make simple syrup in the microwave, or sweeten it with honey.
- Garnishes: tequila salt (optional) for rimming and lime wedges to elevate your cocktail!
How to Make a Tequila Gimlet
Forgetting about stressing when it comes to making cocktails. No matter if you're a rookie or a pro, this drink is one that you'll perfect every single time.
- Prep the glass
If salted rims are your jam, prep the glass first to enjoy your drink right after making it. Typically, a gimlet glass is used for this cocktail. - Make the cocktail
Gimlets are best enjoyed really cold, so make sure to shake vigorously until the shaker's sides are nice and frosted. - Serve & Garnish
Make sure to give your cocktail a good strain before pouring over ice. Garnish with lime wedges, and enjoy sipping on this ultra-refreshing drink!
What Type of Tequila is Best for a Gimlet
Out of all tequila varieties, a Blanco tequila is typically used to make Gimlets. It's the easiest to find an affordable bottle, like Espolón Blanco or Patrón Silver (for an upgrade), although even less expensive ones will work when sweetening the cocktail.
How to Serve a Gimlet
Well-shaken, neat (without ice), and chilled is all you need to know when it comes to serving a Gimlet. It's also typically served in a gimlet glass because it's not that big -it's a small coupe. However, a margarita glass, wine glass, or a short glass works, too!
Best Garnishes for Tequila Gimlet
I keep it simple with a slice of lime, not a wedge, and without salt. However, some people enjoy a salty rim.
How Many Calories are in a Tequila Gimlet
A Tequila Gimlet has around 250 calories, most of which come from the alcohol and the sweetener. You can turn it into a Skinny Gimlet and reduce the calories to 150 per drink by using a sugar-free simple syrup.
More Tequila Cocktails
The possibilities are endless when it comes to cocktails! After the Gimlet, try making this classic Tequila Sour with egg whites, a simple Tequila Sprite or even enjoy this Tequila Sunrise for brunch.

Thank you. I love margaritas but saw this in a book I’m reading and now I’m going to try it!

Isn't this just a Skinny Margarita served up?
Laura Fuentes says
No, a skinny margarita has orange juice instead of orange liquor (this one doesn't have the liquor) and no syrup. Check out the recipe for the Skinny Margarita here.
