Fresh Strawberry Margarita

When my girlfriends and I get together, Frozen Strawberry Margaritas are always at the top of our happy hour menu! But when looking to keep it light, a Skinny Strawberry Margarita always satisfies those same cravings!

While celebrating a friend's birthday at the bar this past weekend, I decided to switch things up and try this strawberry margarita on the rocks. Friends, I was amazed at how this simple change elevated one of my favorites, a Classic Margarita on the rocks.

Ingredients

The measurements for this Strawberry Margarita on the Rocks recipe will be in the recipe card below; but before you make substitutions and end up with a no bueno cocktail, here is what you'll need:

  • Strawberries: fresh or frozen, whatever you have on hand will work just as well. If you are using frozen, make sure to thaw them first.
  • Simple syrup: or honey. Optional for a touch of added sweetness.
  • Tequila: use your favorite brand of Blanco or Silver.
  • Triple sec or Cointreau: a classic staple in any good margarita recipe, this adds a citrus flavor to the mix.
  • Lime juice: freshly squeezed is always the best.
  • Sparkling water: or Topo Tico to add height to your cocktail and give it a light fizz.
  • Garnishes: tequila salt and additional fresh berries to elevate your cocktail. optional for rimming the glass.

You can also use leftover jam to make a single-serve Jargarita!

How to Make A Strawberry Marg on the Rocks

Making this margarita recipe is simple, and some additional tips in each step that ensure the best drink include:

  1. Prep the glass
If salted rims are your jam, prep the glass first to enjoy your margarita right after making it.
  2. Make the cocktail
Give those strawberries a good smashing; you will want to release as much juice as possible to get that delicious natural sweetness. Always add ice to the shaker to chill your cocktail as you mix it.
  3. Serve & Garnish
Make sure to divide the cocktail into two glasses filled with fresh ice, leaving plenty of room, about ⅓ of the glass, to top it with sparkling water.

Are Margaritas Usually on the Rocks

It depends on your happy hour preference! That's one of the many things I love about margaritas; depending on your mood, you can enjoy it frozen or on the rocks! Try this recipe both ways and decide which one is your favorite.

Straining a Strawberry Margarita

For a smoother drinking experience, without finding strawberry tidbits in each sip, I recommend straining your strawberry margarita as you pour it into the ice-filled glass.

Ingredients

  • 4 strawberries, diced
  • 1 ounce simple syrup
  • 3 ounces Blanco or Silver tequila
  • 1 ½ ounces Cointreau or triple sec
  • 2 ounces lime juice, about 1 lime
  • Sparkling water (optional), to top off
  • Salt, optional for rimming

Instructions

Prep:

  • If you enjoy a salted glass, prep the rim of your glasses by rubbing a lime wedge along the rim. Dip in tequila salt, and set aside.

Make the marg:

  • Place the diced strawberries and the simple syrup inside a cocktail shaker. Use a muddler to smash them until all the berries have released all their juices and it resembles a strawberry paste.
  • Add the tequila, triple sec or Cointreau, lime juice, and a handful of ice. Shake vigorously until the sides are fully frosted.

Serve:

  • Fill the two prepared glasses with ice. Strain the strawberry margarita through the strainer and pour it into the prepared glasses. Top off with sparkling water, to make it a taller cocktail. Garnish with a fresh strawberry and lime wedge.
