Best Tequila & Soda Combinations

Soda and tequila combined over ice provide the perfect spiked bubbly drink with a smooth taste that's perfect for happy hour or any time.

You can mix tequila with the classic cola flavors, sprite, orange sodas, and even some of the more nostalgic flavors of root beer and vanilla cream soda.

The top two choices to mix with tequila are grapefruit soda and ginger beer for a quick and easy fizzy drink.

What's great about pairing tequila with soda is that you do not need to use up your expensive sipping Añejo tequila. You can use cheaper tequila like Silver or Blanco tequila.

In no particular order, these are some of the best combinations:

1. Cream Soda

Cream soda has a distinct vanilla flavor that pairs great with the hints of vanilla from the agave in tequila. It's sweet and masks cheap tequila well. Serve it very cold for the best taste.

Classic cream soda: A&W Aged Vanilla Cream Soda
0-Calorie: Zevia Cream Soda
Natural Option: Wild Bill's Vanilla Cream

2. Grapefruit Soda

When mixed with tequila, grapefruit soda tastes citrusy and almost like candy. It's a popular option for making quick Paloma cocktails.

Premium Mixer: Q Mixers Sparkling Grapefruit
0-Calorie: Zevia Grapfruit Citrus
Fun & Nostalgic: Crush Soda Grapefruit

3. Sprite

One of the best soda combinations, in my opinion, is mixing Sprite with tequila. Some people refer to this combination as "poor man's margarita," but don't let that fool you; it's really good and refreshing!

Serve it plain with ice, or add some salt on the rim and a squeeze of lime.

Classic but Mini: Sprite Mini 7.5oz
0-Calorie: Sprite Zero

4. Fanta

This childhood favorite soda turns 21 when mixed with tequila. It's sweet with a strong orange flavor that's refreshing and fun to drink.

You can pop the top of the can or bottle, take a sip or two, add the tequila, and mix it together or serve it over ice.

Classic but mini: Fanta Mini 7.5oz
0-Calorie: Zevia Orange
Natural Option: Wild Bill's Creamcicle

5. Root Beer

Whether you make a spiked root beer float by adding a scoop of ice cream or simply mix it, if you're a root beer drinker, this combo is for you.

This is another sweet combination and masks inexpensive tequila well!

Classic but mini: Mug Root Beer Mini 7.5oz
0-Calorie: Zevia Root Beer
Natural option: Wild Bill's Root Beer

6. Coke

Tequila and Coke is a combination that's commonly served at bars and worth trying! You can opt for regular Coke, or as people who are trying to cut calories do, make a Tequila and Diet Coke or Coke Zero as well. Not a big fan of coke? You can do Tequila and Pepsi too!

Classic but mini: Coca-Cola Mini 7.5oz
Zero but mini: Coke Zero Mini 7.5oz
Natural option: Zevia Cola

7. Ginger Ale

The smoothness of the flavors of Ginger Ale and tequila is what it's all about. Combining the two will create a simple yet sweet, bubbly drink.

If you want to make a Mexican Mule cocktail, you can do so by combining ginger ale, ginger beer, and some tequila.

Classic but mini: Canada Dry Mini 7.5oz
0-Calorie: Zevia Ginger Ale
Premium Mixer: Q Mixers Premium Ginger Ale

8. Orange Cream Soda

Similar to mixing tequila with Fanta, this combination tones down the orange flavor and brings in the vanilla.

Just keep in mind that, typically, orange cream soda is very sweet, so you'll barely taste the tequila. It goes down easy till it hits you.

Nostalgic: Stewart's Orange & Cream Soda (bottles)

9. Coconut Soda

Talk about a tropical mixture! Coconut soda paired with tequila makes me want to have my toes in the sand somewhere on a beach!

The lightness of the coconut is actually really subtle, so you get a good balance of each flavor with this mixture.

EPIC find: Coco Rico Coconut Soda
0-Calorie: La Croix Coconut Sparkling Water
You can also make this Coconut Margarita instead.

10. Ginger Beer

Ginger beer mixed with tequila will actually give the cocktail a savory flavor, which can be a great slow sipper.

You can add a splash of ginger ale to the mix and create a Moscow Mule or even a tad bit of Sprite for a burst of flavor.

Classic: Fever-Tree Ginger Beer
0-Calorie: Zevia Ginger Beer Mixer
Premium Mixer: Q Mixers Spectacular Ginger Beer
Extra "Ginger": Reed's Extra Ginger Beer (reg & zero)

Other Unusual Soda Flavors

When it comes to tequila, you can think outside the box since it pairs great with almost anything! Other combinations that mix well with tequila are berry-flavored sparkling water, the classic citrus of Fresca, Black Cherry Soda, and Orange Mango sparkling water.

Good Ratio of Tequila to Soda

The classic tequila-to-soda ratio is 2 ounces of tequila for every 8 ounces of soda. Simply fill your glass with ice, add the tequila, and pour the soda.

I love using a long cocktail mixing spoon for the job to give everything a stir! Also, since most soda cans are 12 ounces, the mini-sized 7.5-ounce cans are always a terrific single-serve option.

Other Simple Tequila Drinks

If quick and easy or 2-ingredient cocktails are your thing, you might enjoy a classic Tequila Soda, a Tequila and Lemonade cocktail, a Cherry Limeade Margarita, a Tequila Gimlet, or for a festive twist, an Apple Cider Margarita.
