What Is a Hot Toddy

A hot toddy is a simple alcoholic drink, typically made with hot water, honey, citrus, and alcohol (often whiskey or brandy). They're enjoyed when temperatures drop or you're feeling under the weather.

Personally, I really enjoy making a hot toddy with tequila since that's my liquor of choice.

Best Cocktail for a Sore Throat

Nothing soothes a sore throat better than a warm drink with honey and lemon. Add tequila and now you can enjoy a cocktail that's both delicious and soothing. You can also try this tequila hot chocolate recipe for a sweet treat.

Ingredients

You probably already have everything you need to make a hot toddy with tequila. The measurements are below but here is why each ingredient is important:

  • Honey or agave: sweetens the cocktail, soothes your throat, and makes it delicious.
  • Cinnamon: just a pinch to enhance the flavor plus a stick for garnish.
  • Hot water: used to dissolve the honey and make this cocktail sippable.
  • Tequila: I prefer añejo tequila because it's aged and delicious. Your favorite tequila will work too.
  • Lemon juice: the citrus that pairs with tequila and adds flavor and vitamin C.
  • Vanilla extract: adds a little hint of sweetness to this hot cocktail.

Best Type of Tequila to Use

I personally enjoy making a hot toddy with Añejo tequila because it's aged, between 1 and 3 years, and it tends to have hints of caramel and cinnamon undertones from being aged in an oak barrel. Of course, if you don't have Añejo, use your favorite tequila.

How to Make a Hot Toddy with Tequila

Making a hot toddy is super simple and you can enjoy a mug in less than 5 minutes. You'll simply:

  1. Heat up the water
You'll pour it hot into the mug so you'll want to do this step first.
  2. Dissolve the honey
Honey dissolves best with hot liquid so I do this step first
  3. Add tequila
Once everything is added into a mug, add your favorite tequila and mix.
  4. Enjoy:
Enjoy sipping his hot toddy in your favorite mug or take it to-go in an insulated travel mug to keep you warm outside!

Serving This Tequila Cocktail

This hot tequila cocktail is enjoyed out of a ceramic or glass in a mug. You can also take it on the go and retain its heat longer by making it inside a thermos travel mug.

Loooooove!!! Needed a hot drink to soothe a sore throat and all of my hispanic buddies have ALWAYS sworn by tequila. My Italian Stepmom always had me drink hot lemonade w/brandy. Both WORK!!
I mixed your recipe up w/Chamomile tea along with the honey/lime/spices and the vanilla adding my favorite Heraduras !!! WOWOWOW!!

I'm hoping this KNOCKs this crud out of me finally. Don't know why I didn't turn to a hot toddy w/Tequila on Day ONE.

    Thank you!!
