I thought it was too good to be true, but it turns out that a margarita with Dr. Pepper is worth making!

Viral TikTok Dr. Pepper Margarita

When my daughter's college friends sent me the viral TikTok to make a Dr. Pepper Margarita, I'll admit I was a bit of a skeptic -until I made it.

As a fan of tequila and Coke, why wouldn't I like its cousin, Dr. Pepper, in a cocktail? It's good, bubbly, refreshing, and it boozies up this iconic soda.

Is Dr. Pepper and Tequila Good?

Absolutely! This delicious combination of Dr. Pepper and tequila come together to create a fizzy yet boozy happy hour cocktail. And honestly, it's so good, you'll almost forget there's alcohol in it, so be careful!

Ingredients

A Dr. Pepper Margarita may only have a few ingredients, but before you make any swaps to the recipe, see why each ingredient is needed to make this drink:

  • Tequila: use your favorite brand of Blanco or Silver.
  • Lime juice: freshly squeezed is always the best!
  • Simple syrup: or agave (optional) for added sweetness.
  • Dr. Pepper: I make this drink using diet Dr. Pepper, but regular works as well.
  • Garnishes: salt (optional) for rimming, and a lime wedge.

How to Make a Dr. Pepper Margarita

Crack open your can and let's get mixing! Here is how to make the viral Dr. Pepper Margarita with a few additional tips in each step to ensure the perfect sip:

  1. Prep the glass
If you enjoy a salted rim, you'll want to start by prepping your glass first so you can enjoy your Margarita right after making it.
  2. Make the marg
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine all required ingredients being sure to leave out the Dr. Pepper until the end. Give everything a good shake until the sides of the glass are fully frosted. Note: you can also combine all required ingredients into a glass and stir with a cocktail spoon for easier making.
  3. Serve & Garnish
To your prepared glass with fresh ice, pour your shaken mixture. Top it off with Dr. Pepper to the top and garnish with a lime wedge. Enjoy!

Garnishing this Viral Margarita

A Dr. Pepper Margarita is best enjoyed with a salted rim to balance out the sweetness from the soda and a garnish of a lime wedge for a bit of citrusy flavor! Other delicious garnish ideas include Maraschino cherries, dehydrated orange slices, and for added sweetness, a sugared rim puts this drink over the top!

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces tequila
  • ¾ ounce lime juice
  • ½ ounce simple syrup or agave, optional
  • 4 ounces Dr Pepper
  • Lime wedge, for serving

Instructions

Prep the glass:

  • If you enjoy a salted glass, prep the rim of your glass by rubbing a lime wedge along the rim. Dip into margarita salt and set aside.

Shake things up:

  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add tequila, lime juice, and simple syrup or agave (if using). Personally, I think Dr. Pepper is sweet enough, so it doesn't really need it. Shake vigorously until the sides are fully frosted.

Serve:

  • Add fresh ice to the prepared glass and pour the contents of the shaker into the glass. Fill the glass with Dr. Pepper, about 4 ounces, to the top.
  • Garnish with a lime wedge.

You can also add all ingredients to a blender and blend on the smoothie setting if you prefer blended over on the rocks.
