What is a Bloody Maria

A Bloody Maria is the Mexican version of a Bloody Mary where either tequila or mezcal (a type of tequila) is used as the alcohol. Wondering why Bloody Maria vs Bloody Mary? Maria is the proper Spanish name for Mary, so it would only be fair to be named accordingly.

This particular recipe uses mezcal, which provides the classic tequila-based Maira with hints of smoky flavoring that's delicious.

What is in a Mezcal Bloody Maria

The star of the show is the Mezcal that is added but let's not overlook the rest of the ingredients in the version of this classic drink. To make this recipe you'll need:

  • Mezcal: pick your favorite brand; if you don't have one, I recommend some great options down below.
  • Tomato juice: I like to use low sodium to cut down on the added salt.
  • Lime juice: or lemon juice, freshly squeezed is the best.
  • Horseradish: adds a zesty kick to the mix.
  • Worcestershire sauce: gives this cocktail a heightened flavor.
  • Tabasco sauce: optional, for those of us who like spice.
  • Celery salt: perfect for more flavor than regular salt.
  • Ground black pepper: just a dash will do.
  • Garnishes: lime wedge, celery rib, olives.

How to Make a Bloody Maria with Mezcal

Grab your ingredients and a few essentials to make this bloody Maria with mezcal recipe. Essentially, you'll:

  1. Prep the glass
    Bloody Maria's are best enjoyed in a chilled pint glass with a salted rim, prep your drink so you can enjoy right after making it.
  2. Make the cocktail
    You'll want to give this cocktail a good shake to ensure all the ingredients are well combined.

Made in Mexico this Mezcal is pure in flavor, smooth enough to drink straight or mixed in a cocktail. This brand also has infused varieties, with the Blood Orange being an excellent choice.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces mezcal
  • 4 ounces tomato juice
  • ½ ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1 ½ teaspoons horseradish, to taste
  • 4 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon Tabasco sauce
  • 1 pinch celery salt & pepper
  • Garnishes: lime wedge, celery ribs, olives, tajín seasoning

Instructions

Prep:

  • If you enjoy a rimmed glass, rub a lime wedge along the rim and dip the glass into tequila salt or Tajín seasoning for a spicy drink.

Make the cocktail:

  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the mezcal, tomato juice, lemon juice, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, celery salt, and black pepper. Shake vigorously until the sides are frosted.

Serve:

  • Fill a pint glass with fresh ice and strain the mezcal bloody Maria through the strainer.
  • Garnish with a lime wedge, celery, and olives.
